Lopez-Oña, J.V. and Baumert, G.S.  1979.  The known impurities in raw sugar are generally classified into two major groups: ash and organic. These known impurities have a specific effect upon the refining process and the removal of ash constituents in sugar refining is next in importance to the removal of color.
