Dr. Humbert, R.P.  1976.  The first large plant built to produce alcohol directly from sugarcane was scheduled to go on stream in November 1975, in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. The distillery GIASA is designed to produce 100,000 liters of alcohol per day. Brazil currently produces over 700,000,000 liters of alcohol from molasses produced by the sugar industry.
